The rate is only
part of the picture.

There is no single price for help at home. Your area, schedule, services and provider all affect the quote.

  1. Start with the schedule

    Which days, how many hours, and what help does your parent need?

  2. Check the billable hours

    A short visit may still be billed at the provider’s minimum.

  3. Add the other charges

    Ask about setup, weekly, travel, holiday and cancellation fees.

A recurring month is weekly cost × 52 ÷ 12. An actual calendar month’s bill can differ. One-time setup is excluded from this monthly average.

A visit minimum can change the cost even when the hourly rate stays the same.

In this separate example at $30/hour, a family requests two hours on four days. The provider bills a three-hour minimum each visit.

That means 12 billable hours instead of the eight requested. Then the weekly and setup fees are added.

Unknown fees and minimums are not zero. Ask for them in writing.

Help at home or home health?

These budgets are for non-medical help with daily activities and household tasks. Skilled nursing and therapy involve different services and prices.

Medicare’s home health coverage does not pay for 24-hour home care or personal care when that is the only help needed. Check the person’s exact benefits and eligibility with their plan or provider.

Home care or assisted living?

Assisted living includes a different setting and services. Its monthly price cannot be compared with an hourly rate alone.

Include housing, added expenses and first-month cash needs. Compare what each written offer includes.
